Nick Sylvester was born and raised in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia. He attended Harvard University, where he was a writer for The Harvard Lampoon, a humor magazine. He also played trumpet professionally in wedding and jazz bands in high school.

Sylvester started his career as a music journalist, writing for Pitchfork from 2002 to 2006 and serving as an editor from 2004 to 2006. He also wrote for The Village Voice, n+1, The Wire, and New York Magazine. In 2006, he was suspended from The Village Voice for fabricating parts of an essay about a secret society of pickup artists. He later joined The Colbert Report as a writer.

Sylvester also pursued his passion for music as a musician, producer, and songwriter. He formed the punk rock band Mr. Dream in 2008, and released two albums and an EP with them. He also lived with James Murphy in Los Angeles in 2009, during the recording of LCD Soundsystem’s This Is Happening. He learned a lot from Murphy about recording, mixing, and producing music. He also performed in the men’s chorus for the then-final LCD Soundsystem shows in 2011.

In 2014, he produced La Isla Bonita by Deerhoof, as well as the Northtown and Ratchet by Shamir. He moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to further his career as a songwriter and record producer.
